STATEMENT

I am a freelance photographer specializing in documentary and editorial photography on location - and increasingly in landscape and nature work.

For me, the greatest meaning and satisfaction has always been derived from searching for and making images which, while rooted in a specific time and place, speak beyond them in some special way. I work best when - after getting an understanding of the subject and the client's needs - I am free to search for these images. By observing as much as possible, I tend to approach even my editorial work in a documentary manner.

CHRONOLOGY

After college, my wife and I worked in VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and the Peace Corps (teaching English as a Second Language in Libya, North Africa). I then assisted Arie deZanger, a large format still life photographer in New York City, and photographed for community newspapers in Brooklyn.

From 1975-1998 I was the Brown University Photographer responsible for the photography in major publications. The images produced were documentary, editorial, feature, environmental portraiture, architectural, scenic and illustrative. During these years, I also freelanced, exhibited, made slide shows and presentations, and gave workshops. Assignments took me to Europe, Asia, Africa, the Mideast and Central America. CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) recognized my work many times, including Photographer of the Decade for the 1980s.

I have been freelancing since 1998 and am a member of ASMP (the American Society of Media Photographers), Creative Eye Cooperative and Mira and proudly adhere to the ASMP Code of Ethics.

AMERICA 24/7

I was one of the 1000 photographers contracted for the America 24/7 project. We photographed - documented - digitally across the country during the week of 12-18 May 2003. The project was produced by the original creators of the 'Day in the Life' books. The goal was to create a time capsule of life across all 50 states during the course of one week. In addition to the professional team, the organizers also invited students, amateurs and other professional photographers to contribute digital photos that represented their own visions of America. The results will be published in over 50 illustrated books (a big national book in the fall of 2003 and one book on every state sometime in 2004). For more information, click on: America 24/7.
