Heather Brauer '97

When Heather Brauer '97 began serving as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in 1997, she had no idea it would lead her to pursue a degree in international management, with the goal of working at the global level.

Leaving for Namibia in October 1997, she was assigned to the secondary education project, teaching science. She taught physical science and English to about 220 students in grades nine and 10 in the rural village of Gibeon.

"I learned that cultural tradition, ignorance, and denial are killing many people in Namibia and neighboring countries," she says. "I learned that my job was not done after the two years I spent in Namibia."

In May 2001, she began attending business school at Thunderbird, The American Graduate School of International Management in Phoenix. She is currently on a six-month internship at Merck & Co. in Whitehouse Station, N.J., working in the worldwide human health marketing division in the strategic business analysis group. This past January, she traveled to South Africa with 14 other Thunderbird students to study that country as an emerging market.

After graduation, she plans to apply for a job with a pharmaceutical company and hopes to work on projects with a global focus, but especially related to diseases and health issues in Africa. "One of my long-term goals is to work for an organization such as UNAIDS, WHO, UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders, or World Vision," she says. "I hope to offer my international management skills to continue the success of these aid organizations."

She welcomes hearing from alumni and can be contacted at brauerhlb@global.t-bird.edu
