American Peace Corps asked to be role models

Bolgatanga, Aug. 25, GNA - The US Ambassador in Ghana, Mrs Mary Yates, at the weekend called on Peace Corps Volunteers to put up their best and be role models in the communities they serve.

She advised them to continue to show the positive attitude that they exhibited during their training, stay within their job description and relate well with the people they meet.

Mrs Yates, who was on a day's visit to the Upper East Region, swore in 11 new volunteers in Bolgatanga.

She thanked the host families whom the volunteers stayed with to acquaint themselves with the traditions and culture of the people they will be living and working with and also learn the languages of the communities they will be serving.

The Ambassador asked them to feel free to seek help from her office and other people in authority whenever they have difficulties. Mr Mahami Salifu, Regional Minister, said the Peace Corps involvement in the development of the country has expanded from teaching in schools to cover water and sanitation, forestry, small enterprises development and others.

"This is a partnership we will like to sustain in the development of our region and Ghana."

He assured them of the support of the people land the Regional Coordinating Council.

The volunteers underwent three months' pre-training and were exposed to schools to observe Ghanaians and PCU teachers.
