Over 130 American citizens are currently serving as Peace Corps Volunteers in Romania, working in four program areas: Health, Social and Youth NGO Development: Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL); Community Economic Development; and Environmental Management and Education. Peace Corps Volunteers serve throughout the country in communities large and small. To date, over 400 Americans have served in Romania as Peace Corps Volunteers.
The first Volunteers arrived in Romania in March 1991 to assist Romanian orphanages. This activity later evolved into the Health, Social and Youth NGO Development program. Volunteers working in this sector offer organizational development skills to NGOs, which offer services to special needs populations. The TEFL program began in 1992, providing native English speakers to enhance the English education program in secondary schools through Romania.
1993 marked the beginning of the Community Economic Development program, which works closely with various county and municipal Chambers of Commerce, local Foundations and NGOs, and international development organizations. In 1998 the Environmental Management and Education program was started, with the volunteers working with community and regional environmental organizations, schools, and NGOs in a continuous effort to introduce new or expand current environmental education and awareness programs for students and adults.
