Hi,
I was not actually in the Peace Corps, however, I met several volunteers. My Mum and Dad (Celia and Oscar Robertson) are from St. Vincent, and their house was rented out to a few of them. I became close friends with Kelly DeSouza and Kevin (can't remember surname), it would have possibly been around 92-95. I can't remember. My Aunt is Daphne Williams, and a few peace corp stayed with her, and in my Mum and Dads. Feel free to get in touch if you knew them. Also it would be nice to get back in touch with both Kevin and Kelly, if anyone knows of their whereabouts

I read your posting on the Peace Corps online bulletin board and thought that perhaps I could help in some way by connecting you with a Vincentian friend who now lives and works in the states.
I am a returned Peace Corps volunteer who served in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) back in 1996-97. I worked for the Red Cross Red Crescent Society and at that time, the Red Cross had no mental health programs. My fellow volunteers worked at other NGOs but none of them, as I recall, focused on mental illness. Even basic health care was substandard and not easily available/accessible. There can also be quite a bit of distrust of western medicine among Vincentians. During my time there, I was able to "start" (I put that in quotes because it was really a very small start) an HIV education program and service referral program through the Red Cross Red Crescent Society. The biggest obstacles to almost any public health program in SVG (save things like mosquito abatement and other noncontroversial programs) are cultural. Overall, Vincentian attitudes about sex, gender roles, mental illness, etc. - even among some educated Vincentians - are greater
obstacles in getting good information to the people than poverty itself (I guess it's pretty much the same everywhere...not an exclusively Vincentian trait)
That said, I am sure things have changed - I can only hope for the better - in 10 years.
I have stayed in contact with the Vincentian family that I lived with and rented my apartment from (it was an apartment in their home). Their daughter, Ulrika, now lives and works in New York. Mrs. Alexander, Ulrika's mother, goes back and forth from Canoun to NY and is a former teacher. I am sure that Ulrika or her Mom can tell you about the current health services available in SVG.
