Peace Corps Programs in Thailand

Peace Corps Programs in Thailand

Since 1962, Peace Corps Volunteers have been serving in Thailand in a variety of capacities and numbers. In the second half of 1997, Thailand's economy collapsed after a period of quick decline. The impact has been extensive at the national level as well as on the quality of life for the rural population. The need for Peace Corps to continue its service in Thailand is more apparent than at any time in recent years.

Education
Volunteers work in the most rural villages in the poorest regions in Thailand. They use an integrated education approach to help primary and secondary schools and their communities address issues of health (including HIV/AIDS) education, environmental awareness and teacher training. The needs in these three sectors are substantial throughout rural Thailand.

Volunteers teach English and work directly with English teachers to enhance their capacity to teach and interact in the English language. They also are active in a variety of health and environmental crossover activities, such as: working to eradicate malnutrition and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS; developing and delivering health-care programs and promoting community participation in addressing these issues; and working with villagers and farmers to carry out needs assessments, to provide technical assistance, and to assist in developing educational programs or wildlife research projects.
