Howard Frank Johnson, 85, died Friday, May 7, 1999.

He was born September 21, 1913 to Iva M. (Shepherd) and Frank Earl Johnson in the family home in Holton Township, Taylor County, near Gravity, IA.

Mr. Johnson graduated from Logan County Schools, Fleming, CO.

After graduating from Colorado State University in 1935, Mr. Johnson worked for the Soil Conservation Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs on the Navajo and Hopi Reservations in AZ, NM and UT and as the superintendent of the Blackfeet Reservation in MT, the Osage Indian Reservation in OK, and Seneca Nation of Indians in NY.

After retiring, he was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Barbados, West Indies in 1974 and 1975.

He was an adult volunteer in Scouting for 30 years. He received the Silver Beaver from the North Central Mountain Council in 1964.

He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Zia Daylite Lodge #77 AF & AM, Memorial Lodge #1, the Scottish Rite, and the Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple of NM, Order of the Eastern Star, and the York Rite Bodies in Cut Bank and Shelby, MT, Elks Lodge, the National Rifle Association, the Friendship Force, American Association of Retired Persons, American Association of Retired Federal Employees, the La Noche Garden Club, NM Grape Growers Association and the NM Coin Club.

He married Roberta M. Russell of Chester, Nebraska in 1935, who preceded him in death in 1988.

They had three children, Maxine Metsker of Colorado Springs, CO, Dr. James R. Johnson of Rapid City, SD, and Eugene E. Johnson (deceased).

There are four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by three sisters, Marjorie Jones of Albuquerque, Margaret Simpson and Marion Ruth Hinde both of CO, and their families.

In 1991, Mr. Johnson married Dema D. Schmuck.

Services will be held Monday, 2:30 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Dr. Charles Crutchfield officiating. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Monday, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ballut Abyad Shrine Crippled Children's Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 8410, 87108, Presbyterian Hospice, 5300 Constitution Ave. NE, 87110, or the charity of your choice. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
