Hi, My Country Director made all sorts of blatently false allegations against me to a prospective employer, and hence I did not get the job. I can prove his statements were false, and even that he knew they were false when he said them. But I know taking legal action is difficult being that we were "volunteers" and not "employees". Does anyone have any experience with suing a Peace Corps administrator? Particularly for defamation? Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Please email me: email@example.com Thanks

You can contact the Inspector General(Charles D. Smith) and/or the Director of Peace Corps. The OIG can be e-mailed at firstname.lastname@example.org,email@example.com(They will do anonymous investigations.).

The OIG has already been involved. I have found them to be not neutral at all, as they claim to be. They are wholly self-interested. The OIG lawyer is a lawyer at the General Counsel at Peace Corps Headquarters, and serves solely to protect the organization, and not RPCVs. Their lawyers refuse to speak with my mother, who is a lawyer. My mother found several instances of illegality in what occurred, and Peace Corps lawyers claim nothing illegal happened, but they refuse to cite any law or explain why they are discounting the law and past cases my mother has cited. My OIG investigator has gone so far as to threaten me (saying if I were to sue, that he could dig up negative information on me as well). I also tried getting legal advice from Peace Corps Washington's General Cousel, and they refuse to help an RPCV at all if the intention is to use the advice to possibly sue PC staff. It's a big bureaucratic and biased nightmare.

Is Charles Smith still there? How long can employees serve? I thought it was five years. Rules are only for those in power I guess. Even when he leaves everything will stay the same. You are right the IG and the GC only serve the establishment of the organization, not the volunteer. That is why we have been asking the Congress for an attorney to work for us volunteers.
Kat good luck and please keep in touch. Let me know what you thought about my last e-mail.
