I was recently deferred from medical clearance for six months due mainly to high cholesterol. I've had a second test which was much better. (In fact I'd almost bet that if these were my original numbers it wouldn't have been a problem.) I've also lost a little weight and my BP is down. There is no history of heart attacks, strokes or any other heart-related diseases or problems in my family. I'm 25 years old, and I'm not planning on having a heart attack in the next three years. I was told I have 60 days to appeal the medical review. I plan on having my doctor write a letter with some diet/exercise plan, and also saying that he thinks I won't die (or something like that). Has anyone here appealed their medical review? Can you offer any advice? |

Read this article and have your doctor take a look at the medical guidelines for your case. Best Regards, Admin1
| Peace Corps' Screening and Medical Clearance The purpose of Peace Corps' screening and medical clearance process is to ensure safe accommodation for applicants and minimize undue risk exposure for volunteers to allow PCVS to complete their service without compromising their entry health status. To further these goals, PCOL has obtained a copy of the Peace Corps Screening Guidelines Manual through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and has posted it in the "Peace Corps Library." Applicants and Medical Professionals (especially those who have already served as volunteers) are urged to review the guidelines and leave their comments and suggestions. Then read the story of one RPCV's journey through medical screening and his suggestions for changes to the process. |

Thanks. I've looked at that. I still would like to hear from someone who had trouble with high cholesterol and what they had to do satisfy the PC. Matt |
