This informal guide (new as of September 1996) to restaurants serving African food from Sub-Saharan Africa is composed of two parts: the top part, where you can enter information and comments on any Sub-Saharan African restaurant you may know about, and the bottom part, where your comments and those of previous visitors are displayed. By the way, I have decided to exclude North African restaurants because at least in my experience, the line between North African and Middle Eastern is a tenuous one.... and there are loads of Middle Eastern restaurants, but not a whole lot of Sub-Saharan African one. By the way, there is a vast directory of African restaurants at the Directory of Restaurants Serving African Cuisine. At 233k, it's far more comprehensive than this will ever be (it includes Middle Eastern restaurants, for example), but also a lot less funky (in my humble opinion.)

Comments: The Africkiko Restaurant is located at 925 5th St., NW. An interesting dark and drab building. Set up just like a chop bar in Ghana, a very casual place. Great value, about $6.00 for all you can chop. Foods served: fufu, kenkey, fried plantain and beans, rice balls, wakye, banku with okro stew, fried fish, etc. It,s mainly a lunch place, hours Mon-Sat 11am-6pm, Sun 12 noon - 5pm.

Comments: I hope it still exsists. My husband and I discovered it when we were in Vancouver for an actuarial convention. They served the Zaire national dish, Chicken Mwamba. It was as good as I remembered. And they had samosas. For dessert we had Mango mousse. It was a fantastic, authentic meal.

Comments: This little cafe (with just four small tables) is a favorite of Ivorien students in New York City. It's in a small square north of Central Park, at 7 St. Nicholas Ave. at Lenox Ave. and 111th Street. They serve Ivorien and Senegalese food, including foutou (fufu)...

Comments: The Ocholas, who own the restaurant, are a wonderful couple
from Western Kenya. No ugali, goat meat or Tusker served,
(alas) but you can get mandaazi, fried-fish-rolled-in-a-chapati
sandwich, and a wonderful spiced cabbage side dish.
Mzuri sana! Carin also sells clothes and jewelry in the
shop in back.

Comments: Specialty International, AKA Sam's Place, is not really a restaurant, but rather a wholesale/retail business that sells West African food, drink and spices. Owned by Sam and Fabia Jack, of River State, Nigeria, they also have a different prepared plate every day of the week except Sunday and Monday. They import palm wine and, sometime, Star and Gulder beer as well as cola nuts, hot pepper and palm oil. It gets busy about five on weekdays when Miami's dispersed African population starts getting off work and is also pretty busy on Saturday when Africans from all over South Florida come in to shop and hang out.

Comments: This is the best West African restaurant in the L.A. area, and I heartily recommend it. The owner and the cooks are from Liberia, and the food is authentic. Fufu, palm butter, ground nut stew, cassava leaf, jollof rice, etc. are all deliceous. And they have a selection of West African beers to wash it all down with! Cheers!

Comments: This little African cafe is right near the San Francisco
Public Library, so it draws a crowd, but is TERRIBLE!! The
food isn't hideous, although often too cold and bland, but
the attitude is horrendous and the service is so slow, you
could be dead and buried before you get a plate. There are
very few African restaurants in SF, and this one is cheap,
but there are two Ethiopian cafes which are much better and
just as inexpensive: Axum Cafe and Massawa, both on Haight
Street.

Comments: A great place, run by a friendly Nigerian couple. Who would expect to find such a nice place right in the heart of downtown Milwaukee? I don't know if Mindy-Mindy really is an authentic African dessert, but it sure was good.
P.S. I returned to this restaurant recently and had a delicious fufu dinner: the real thing, with pounded yams (not casava, not some kind of paste!!!)

Comments: The Black and White serves traditional as well as European
and American cuisine. The owner lives in a house behind the
restaurant and the food is cooked in his house. The restaurant
is under a roof that is supported by pillars. There is a low
wall that encloses the eating area. This allows one to feel
as though they were inside, yet still outside, as the wall is only
about 3 feet high and affords a view of the yard and a gentle
crossbreeze to circulate. The food is good. The steaks can
be tough though. The filet mignon is excellent. If you bring
a cassette of music you'd like them to play, they will play it
for you. Good if you are trying to set the mood for a date.
An all around nice place to eat in West Africa.

Comments: This little place is run by a cool guy from Ghana's Volta Region whose father is from Atakpame, Togo. The night we went, he was out of ignames but made fufu with potatoes -- it came along with sauce d'arachide and was great! There are also many rice and beans dishes, plaintains, and greens to be had. Alcohol consists of Ivorien and Ghanaian beers (why not BB), as well as bottled palm wine. He plays good music, and told us that he might try to have a live band play on weekends in the future! If you're ever in Portland (a great town), be sure to check this place out!

Comments: My favorite lunch spot during those heady Peace Corps days of not so long ago. All that's served there is pate with about four different sauces -- a beef sauce, a beef, sesame and greens sauce, a fish sauce and a plain tomato and pepper sauce. The beef, sesame and greens sauce is about the best sauce I had in Togo. The pate is slightly fermented, but not so much as akassa, and is served hot. You'll have red oil smile by the time you're finished eating. There's ice water to be had, as well as a small buvette across the street. If you're brave, ask the voodoo food lady who runs the place what the name of her restaurant means. By the way, the place is located on Avenue Duisbourg in Kodjoviakope, west of Mamy's toward the Ghanaian border.

Comments: The Best African (Ghanaian)Restaurant in Washington, DC., managed by Ghanaians. The Embassy of Ghana Staff, Ministers and their Guests and Friends of Ghana spend their lunch and dinner time in this excellent atmosphere. You may run into Ike Quartey the Champ. Peace Corps in Washington, DC held its annual Recruitment in this friendly atmosphere. Just name the food... fufu, kenkey, 'red red', wakye, jollof, banku, shito, kelewele, peanut soup, light soup, yam, spinach, vegetarian, okra.... (sorry, I'm running out of space). DAAVI is the chef. She is well-known among FOG and other RPCVs. We have excellent Bar. We serve African beer...Club, Star, Guinness, Heinekens, Mamba, Ngoma, (of course, American). We serve excellent gourmet coffee and dessert.

vegetarian thieb. We also had an
incredible akra starter (fritters made of

(hibiscus), ginger, or tamarind juice as
well as ataya. We didn't try the ataya,
but the juices were homemade and

Comments: The Bukom Cafe is on 18th street, near the intersection of 18th & Columbia. I swore I used to own one of the panyas that served as a wallhanging in here. Ngoma beer, fried plantains with damn-hot green pimante sauce, fufu with good texture but slightly different taste, and an "African salad" that sounded a lee-tle too realistic...I hear Wednesday is Reggae night. We went on a Friday and the restaurant suddenly got very crowded (standing room only) around 10pm, the same time the band kicked up. We played "I wonder if those are RPCVs" with the other tables of yovos. Great atmosphere but if you want a quiet dinner, go early.

Comments: So for all you people missing Ghana this is the shit!!! There fufu is from a package, and they have all the Nigerian soups, except that they also use like the tomatoe base sauce that goes on top of rice for there fufu. That is what I had and it kicked butt!!
But the best part is that they also have Star and Guilder and Palm wine. So even if you don't want to eat the food, ah the beer and palms (which also come in a bottle) pretty much rock.
Anyway the place is at 1739 Broadway ave in Oakland! Check it out

Comments: The menu is limited but what we ate (2 of the 3 vegetarian options) was very tasty. A carrot and greens dish that was too oily on one visit was just right the next time I ordered it. This is a very small restaurant so speed of service depends on how many customers the one waitperson has to deal with, but they are always friendly and polite. The music is also very nice (Ethiopian singers on cassette tapes).

Comments: These 3 Ethiopian restaurants are all wonderful. Doro Wat, Yebeg Alicha, Kitfo, Tibse and many other dishes are available for you to try. All 3 restaurants also serve Tej (Ethiopian Honey Wine) too so, if you're in the area and like Ethiopian food as much as I do, try any of these places! The service in each restaurant is very friendly.

Comments: The best "jaba-ji" (onion sauce) in Mali, and exceptional roasted chicken or guinea fowl, along with hard-to-find "fonio" (a tiny cous-cous like grain), no pretensions and quick service make this a four star establishment in my book.

Comments: This place is rad, they have 24oz bottles of Ngoma Lager and meals are $6.00 per plate, with that you get to taste absolutly every thing they have serve.
the service is also quick and friendly.

Comments: You will find the Tablier on the left of the road next to the little mosque after the third speed bump on the road to Maradi coming from Miamey.

This is the most exceptional Tablier (omlet and coffee maker in Niger bare none.

Tablier: mean table seller in in french and is an economic term to describe a small formal or informal buisness.

There are tabliers all over Niger and when traveling are the shurest way to get something to eat other than brochetts generally the quality of there cooking varies and the cleanliness is at best doughtfull.

The Dirni-Konni Tablier is an exception and it trend setter for tabliers that will eventually be followed.

His place is very small entierly enclosed and spotlesly clean. He has one talble with two benches a nice oil cloth on the table with a small vase with a plastic flower in it.

He sits behind the counter and does everything without moving from his seat. He can reache the ice box, he has one, on his left with cold soft drinks in it. He has his stove in fornt of him ahd his egges and pans on the wall to his right. In fornt of him he has a display of peas beans tuna and other canded fish. You pick your cna and he will prepaire any omlet you want.

Comments: Cafe Bukom is run by a guy who was once associated with Cafe des Arts in Lome, so he knows about the Togo scene. Thankfully, he knows about good maritime cooking as well. There's authentic goat with red-oil and egusi detsi, which can be had with gari, rice, or fufu. I'd recommend the fufu and ask for a side of gari -- it's a fairly passable gari for the States. (You must remember I lived in Vo prefecture, the gourmet gari capital of the world.) A non-RPCV friend of mine got "red red" that same night, and it was good, spicy and authentic without being overwhelming. Of course, the fact that there is Ngoma there (Awooyo and Pils) doesn't hurt at all -- in fact it helps quite a bit. (We asked for sodabi, but there was none -- I'd heard that there was some to be had across the street at Casa Africana. Depending on your Togo skills and mastery of mina and maritime schmoozing, you may or may not get to sample it. We did.) Anyway, Bukom's is a great place -- a good introduction to southern Togolese cuisine for the American palate.

We expected bigger portions than we were given because of all the close competition, but the quality was high so that offset the brief disappointment. Comments: Located close to the Westport artsy district, this particular Blue Nile (the third such restaurant title we've seen for Ethiopian food - must be like "Mom's Diner" in the US) was a mild disppointment, but not overly so. We were visiting some friends and wanted to show them a new and exciting cuisine to try, and it fell a little shy of the sparkling reviews that we normally give Ethiopian dishes. The service was slow, yet dependable (we always got what we wanted - eventually) and the dishes were spiced much differently than what we were used to, with much less berebere and more like a curry mix. The vegetables were a little soggy but the meats were good, although the portions suffered from being there on a Saturday night. The injera was a bit thin also, but still tasty. We plan on trying it again just to see if we were there on a bad night.

Comments: The Senegalese owner and cook Aissatou doesn't always have yams available in the kitchen, but she will buy and pound them if you call in advance. Otherwise she serves fried plantains, tiebou djenne, jollof rice, chicken, fish, and beef. You will make her day by speaking French (or better yet, Wolof) to her while you wait for your food. On Friday and Saturday nights they often host parties for West Africans who live in Chicago.

Comments: Ofie serves a delicious peanut soup that goes well with fufu; unfortunately, they don't have a large enough mortar to pound the yams, so instead the buy yam flakes. Ofie also serves kelewele (fried plantains), tsire (kabobs), moi-moi (pudding of black-eyed peas, hard boiled eggs, and salmon), jollof rice, and fish. For about $15 you can sample four entrees. Comments: AMOSA opened in June 2000 to provide authentic Senegalese food. It is located within walking distance of the National Voting Rights Museum and the Pettus Bridge of Civil Rights notoriety. It is definitely worth a stop in Selma, AL.

Take the C train and get off at the Utica stop. Exit and take a left on Fulton at the mini-shopping center. Walk two blocks and cross the street. It's between Buffalo and Rochester Streets.
They serve okra, plantain, cassava leaf sauces, and fish, chicken, rice, Vimto, with the rest varying from day to day.
Every dish is about $5 and is very well prepared by the two Guinean women that run the very visible kitchen.
