- What does "invisible writer" mean?
- Many years ago I knew a grizzled old playwright named Ray. He lived off state
disability checks, carried his manuscripts in brown paper bags, and drank cup
after cup of black coffee, which I poured for him from behind the counter of the
coffee shop where I worked. He had one piece of advice for me: "Read Othello.
If you want to be a writer you must first read Othello." Ray was a blue-collar
guy who had never gone to college, but he had read Shakespeare, checked out from
the public library near the furnished room where he lived. Ray understood plot
because he had lived and experienced it. He was a born writer. Over the years
I've met a diverse collection of writers who have never been published or earned
any academic credentials, yet whose claim to the title of artist is genuine.
These invisible writers are soldiers and bakers, convicts and salesmen, winos,
hairdressers, firefighters, farmers and waitresses. Their only qualifications to
literary authenticity are their writings and their desire to write. Often the
only time they have is stolen time, and their private scrawls end up on cocktail
napkins, penciled in the margins of receipts, on any piece of paper handy. I
got to know Tom Carson during the first Gulf War, shortly after his platoon had
been sent to Kuwait. We never met in person. He had written to a co-worker of
mine who had moved on, leaving no forwarding address. When I saw the U.S.
military return address on Tom's letter, I decided to answer it myself. We began
a correspondence that lasted through the war and after he returned to Fort
Benning, Georgia. During a hectic two months, Lt. Carson wrote 39 poems. His
themes were the regimented insanity of military life, isolation and loneliness,
the wind and rain of his soul. Carson wrote his lines in rare solitude, in a
barracks or a tent. During the day, he told me, the thoughts gathered in his
head; he censored them but the forbidden words found expression anyway, for even
the U.S. Army cannot discipline the imagination. People imprisoned in
stultifying, menial jobs can summon, with even a minimal command of language,
something entirely private, unfettered and incalculably powerful. Most
importantly, it is something of their own creation that cannot be taken away.
The sense of purpose and identity that comes with being a writer, creator of a
private world, can be life altering. I've known truck drivers who are
natural-born storytellers; fishermen who paint starkly beautiful word pictures
of life on a crab boat in the Bering Strait. I met a barely literate ex-convict
whose short story about losing his wife and child in a revenge killing for a
gang crime he'd committed was the most heartbreaking thing I've ever read. I met
a ex-alcoholic who wrote about being abandoned by her husband. In a few simple
paragraphs this uneducated woman in her mid-50s expressed a universal sense of
loss in an entirely unsentimental fashion; something that cannot be taught in
any MFA program. My own father, a novelist who was never published, once wrote
about being fired for writing on the job – a chronic problem in his lifetime. He
worked on an assembly line in a factory that manufactured radios, and the
foreman caught him writing one day while the neglected radio parts moved past
him on the belt. "I was only half a radioman," wrote my father. "In my heart, I
was a poet." As Chester Himes wrote in "The Quality of Hurt": "No matter what I
did or how I lived, I had considered myself a writer....It was my salvation. The
world can deny me all other employment, and stone me as an ex-convict...as a
disagreeable, unpleasant person. But as long as I write whether it's published
or not, I'm a writer." I met Celia at a roadside diner, where she cooked greasy
breakfasts for travelers whose faces she'd never again see. Writing, for Celia,
was a way of being elsewhere, of undoing, undreaming, her mundane daily life.
The monotony of her job and the deadening rituals she performed daily were the
inspirations for the poems she scribbled on used order tickets. To hate your job
and do nothing about it is a failure of imagination: a true life sentence. A
Frenchman I know who was a maitre d' at one of the Washington's finest
restaurants, possesses a novel he composed in the twilight time between the
lunch rush and the dinner hour. His joy on writing it was immeasurable. That it
may never be published did not faze him. The point is that he created it. He
finished it. It is his. "Fiction completes us, mutilated beings burdened with
the awful dichotomy of having only one life and the ability to desire a
thousand," Mario Vargas Llosa wrote. I've often looked for my old playwright
friend Ray's name in print, but have never seen it. I imagine him sitting in a
coffee shop somewhere, brow furrowed as he revises lines of his latest play,
completely absorbed in the world of his characters. I'm sure it frustrated Ray
at times, that his work went unrecognized, but it never occurred to him to quit;
just like it would never occur to him to stop breathing. It is not strictly a
tragedy that Ray's plays, the maitre'd's novel or Celia's poems remain
unpublished. Much of the work comes into being for private reasons of the heart.
If every sentence that was written was printed and bound we would drown in a sea
of words – as it is, thousands of books are hastily published, barely read and
forgotten. Writing itself is the aim, for it is writing, not publishing, that
transforms individual human experience. To write, even in obscurity is
worthwhile. As Samuel Becket put it, writing is a way of leaving "a stain upon
the silence."

- Sionist i Fokus; en av huvudaktörer af kinky industrier som heter Gabi
Gleichmann... Detta är den första bastard-figuren i en serie som tänkt
fortsätta i varje nummer. Artikelserien ska ta upp aktuella sionister i
massmedia och försöka ge en bakgrund till deras "berömmelse". Först ut i detta
nummer är Gabi Gleichmann, aktuell p.g.a. hans inbjudan av Taslima Nasrin till
Sverige, i sin egenskap av ordförande i Svenska Pen-klubben.
Gabi Gleichmann har under senare tid råkat ut för mycket uppmärksamhet i våra
media när det gäller fallet Taslima Nasrin. Men det är inte första gången han
hamnar i blåsväder och antagligen inte den sista heller. Vad de flesta inte
känner till om Gabi, Expressens biträdande kulturchef och ordförande i Svenska
Pen-klubben, är att han också är en avslöjad bedragare. I tidningen Z, nr 2,
1994, avslöjas hur han förgäves försökt lura tidningar att köpa falska manus
från kända författare.
För något år sedan erbjöd sig Gleichmann att sälja en intervju med
Nobelpristagaren Alexander Solsjenitsyn till den norska tidningen Aftonposten.
Intervjun visade sig vara falsk och Gabi tvingades dra sig tillbaka under illa
ihoptänkta ursäkter. Det dröjde inte länge innan han var i gång igen. Denna gång
var det kulturtidsskriften Tidens Tegn han ville svindla med en (vad Gabi
Gleichmann uppgav) pinfärsk essä av "hans gamle vän Umberto Eco". Även denna
essä visade sig vara förfalskad och Umberto Eco hade aldrig hört talas om någon
Gabi Gleichmann, än mindre erbjudit honom någon essä.
Nu är Gabi Gleichmann i hetluften igen, men denna gång gäller det inte
förfalskande av artiklar utan förvanskande av verkligheten. I samband med
Taslima Nasrins ankomst var han i gång igen, ivrig att uträtta sitt sionistiska
verk och måla upp en fiendebild av alla muslimer i världen. Inte sedan Rushdie
hade ju ett sånt fint tillfälle uppenbarat sig. Äntligen kunde han börja sprida
sina rasistiska åsikter igen i svenska medier. I början lyckades han också och
måste ha känt sig nöjd när Margaretha af Ugglas ställde upp för att möta Nasrin
vid Arlanda. Men sen började det gå värre.
Taslima Nasrin bjöds till Sverige av Gabi Gleichmann i egenskap av ordförande i
Svenska Pen, men han hade även ett annat syfte. Som biträdande kulturchef på
Expressen ville han dessutom ha ensamrätt på Nasrin, på hennes yttranden och
hennes åsikter. Taslima Nasrin kom att hamna, som Annette Kullenberg,
PublicistKlubbens ordförande, uttryckte det i Aftonbladet (15/10-1994), "Från en
grym isolering i Bangladesh placerades Taslima Nasrin i en annan, mer
sofistikerad isolering i Sverige".
Taslima Nasrin verkar ha mindre och mindre att själv säga till om, snarast
fungerar hon som en liten marionett i sionisternas intressen. Hon hålls i
isolering för att plockas fram vid behov för att ge uppmärksamhet till de
kampanjer Gabi Gleichmann vill föra mot den islamiska världen. Detta
uppmärksammades dock mycket snart och i DN (8/10-1994) publicerade Birgit
Munkhammar en krönika i ämnet. Den direkta orsaken var att Taslima Nasrin skulle
ha uppträtt på en bokmässa i Paris, men den enda som kom var istället Gabi
Gleichmann, med idel dåliga ursäkter. Gabi försökte slingra sig från den
besvikna publikens frågor genom att påstå att han själv inte hade något där att
göra utan "var där som författare". Fortfarande har han inte kunnat avslöja ett
enda verk som han skulle ha skrivit. Återigen var det ett utslag av den judiska
fräckheten, chutzpah, som genast träder fram när bedragaren ertappas på bar
gärning. Den här gången fick den dock inte den effekt som Gabi hade önskat sig.
Mellan den 10/8 och den 8/10 har Gabi Gleichmann så starkt lyckats hålla Nasrin
isolerad att hon inte har gett en enda intervju till någon större svensk
dagstidning, förrutom Expressen, Gabis egen tidning. Detta ska dock snart ändra
sig. Den 12/10 låter sig Nasrin intervjuas av SvD och reslutatet är
förbluffande; Taslima Nasrin har inte bara hållits isolerad från resten av den
svenska pressen av Gabi Gleichmann, dessutom har all hennes privata post gått
genom honom! Eftersom Nasrin själv inte kan svenska har hon varit helt i
händerna på den judiske Gleichmann som endast översatt det som passat honom
själv. Han har konsekvent undvikit att förmedla någon kontakt med andra större
tidningar och även när det gäller artiklar om henne har hon varit helt beroende
av honom. När hon till slut låter sig intervjuas direkt av andra journalister
ger hon snarast ett hopplöst intryck, som en kvinna som helt och hållet förlorat
kontrollen över sitt liv, i händerna på en sionist som vill använda henne för
egna syften. Hennes frågor och svar pendlar mellan misstro, förvåning och ren
desperation. Hennes liv är inte längre hennes eget och hon finner att Gabi gett
löften i hennes namn, löften om saker hon själv aldrig hört talas om.
Gabi Gleichmann framstår nu som spindeln i nätet. Han har, i sin egenskap av
biträdande kulturchef på Expressen, skaffat mycket publicitet åt sig själv och
sin tidning och samtidigt bidragit till att förstärka hatet mot muslimerna,
något som han länge har arbetat med. Men nu börjar omvärlden rikta sina blickar
mot honom och han börjar bli nervös, rädd för att bli avslöjad som den bedragare
och falskspelare han är. Han måste alltså gå till en motoffensiv.
Först ut på arenan för att försöka hjälpa upp den skakiga gestalten som
Gleichmann utgör är arabhataren Per Jönsson på DNs kulturredaktion, om vars
starka rashat vi skrev om i förra numret av Radio Islam. I ett beställningsjobb
i DN (23/10-1994) kastar sig Jönsson ut till anfall, svingandes textens lögner
som ett rostigt svärd över sitt huvud. Men den text som skulle vara skriven till
försvar för Gleichmann förvandlas snart till något annat. Jönsson påstår först
att SvD skulle ha gjort intervjun med Taslima Nasrin utan tillstånd, något som
han sedan tvingas ta tillbaka och be om ursäkt för i DN (26/10-1994). Sedan
börjar han i fler och fler punkter motvilligt ge SvD rätt! "Under sex sju veckor
satt hon i praktiken isolerad, ensam och hem-längtande i diverse hemliga
lokaler" skriver Jönsson och fortsätter med att beskriva Nasrins och Gleichmanns
förhållande som "inte alldeles problemfria kontakter".
Gleichmann börjar vid det här laget känna sig hårt trängd mot väggen, men han
vägrar fortfarande konsekvent att själv försöka svara på anklagelserna och efter
intervjun i SvD är Taslima Nasrin tyst som en mus. När Gleichmann rycker i
trådarna är det svårt som marionett att försöka leva ett eget liv. Gleichmann
skickar ut mer och mer folk i frontlinjen för att slippa ta de stötar som han
själv gjort sig förtjänt av. I Expressen (26/10-1994) skickar han ut Expressens
hela kulturredaktion med hantlangare som Nils Schwarz och Maria Schottenius,
till attack under parollen "Hellre kvantitet än kvalitet". Men inte blir det
mycket sagt, snarast är skriverierna en sorts avancerad konspirationsteori där
man anklagar SvD för att vilja tysta Expressen och därmed göra slut på
yttrandefriheten.
När inget annat fungerar och Gleichmann står med krav på sig från både SvD och
SydSvenska Dagbladet om att han ska avgå, både från PEN och Expressen inser
sionisten Gleichmann att han inte har något val, han måste ta till storsläggan.
Illa kvickt åker han iväg till London, vilket rapporteras på DNs Tysta Mari
sida, för att sammanträffa med Salman Rushdie, den "dödshotade" författaren.
Salman Rushdie, som till vardags brukar "förklä" sig till ortodox jude för att
kunna promenera ostört i London (The Observer 31/7-1994) kunde man tro var en
person som inte skulle vara så nämnvärt intresserad av två tidningars bråk i det
avlägsna Sverige. Men när Gabi Gleichmann rycker i trådarna, samma trådar som
fortfarande håller Taslima Nasrin bunden, måste även Rushdie lyda. Därför
publiceras i DN ett försvar av Gabi Gleichmann skrivet av Salman Rushdie, men
Rushdie gör också vissa iakttagelser. En av de mer viktiga iakttagelserna är att
Taslima Nasrin fortfarande inte skrivit något till försvar av Gleichmann. Ändå
är det hennes kommentarer i SvD som startade hela bråket. Om detta är det ännu
pinsamt tyst från sionisternas sida.
Slutligen blev uppståndelsen kring Gabi Gleichmann för stor för att kunna
ignorera och Gleichmann tvingades avgå för att istället lämna plats åt Theodor
Kallifatides. På Expressens kulturredaktion sitter han dock fortfarande kvar och
fortsätter att sprida sina lögner och bedrägerier.
