Handrahan Praises NPCA’s New Peace Corps Mandate Proposal

Ellsworth, ME - As new Peace Corps legislation is about to be introduced in the House of Representatives, Lori Handrahan, Democratic Congressional candidate for Maine’s 2nd District, announced her support for the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA)’s New Peace Corps Mandate Proposal.

“Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) have a wealth of experience and know-how that must be put to greater use”, says Handrahan, a returned United Nations Volunteer and international development specialist.

Since September 11th, the NPCA has intensified efforts for its New Peace Corps Mandate Proposal. The proposal calls for the establishment of projects that will make better use of the career experience and expertise of returned volunteers by providing lifetime opportunities for continued service in addition to calling for the extension and expansion of traditional Peace Corps programming. The Proposal also calls for the development of strategic planning and innovation in collaboration with host country governments, partner organizations and volunteers.

Lori Handrahan knows first hand from her volunteer and professional development experience, the importance and effectiveness of grass roots level involvement. She realizes that returned volunteers are an “underutilized resource of special intercultural knowledge, skills and personal friendships”.

Handrahan believes America’s international relations could better benefit from the skills, knowledge and cultural sensitivity that RPCVs gain through their own volunteer and professional experience.

Lori welcomes RPCVs’ involvement in her campaign. She also invites RPCVs, their families and friends to join her as she hikes Mt. Katahdin on Memorial Day weekend at the conclusion of her month long, 160-mile walk across the 2nd District. Over 30 campsites have been reserved.
