INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT URGE PRESIDENT TO AFFIRM SIGNATURE

The NPCA supports US signature of international treaties, including the International Criminal Court. On April 11, the Court received sufficient country signatures to begin operations, July 2002. President Clinton signed the treaty. All other industrialized countries have signed it. It is aimed primarily at countries which lack functioning judicial systems.

However, there are signs that President Bush is considering withdrawal of that Presidential signature. Katy Hansen, RPCV and member of the United Nations Association, reports that no nation has ever unsigned a treaty, and that such an action could potentially put other treaties in question by other countries. Furthermore, the US needs to stay at the table on this issue, like others, but such an action would take the US away from the table.

Please write to President Bush and urge him to retain and affirm the Presidential signature on the treaty for the International Criminal Court.
