HEAD OF PLANNING DEPARTMENT QUITS

May 2, 2002 - Press Democrat Author(s): Tom Chorneau

Christine Arnold, head of the Sonoma County planning department since 1997, will leave her position this week for an administrative job with the Peace Corps.

Arnold, 54, took over a troubled department that was the focus of criticism from both the contracting industry and members of the Board of Supervisors primarily because of poor customer service.

While board members say there are still unresolved issues at the Permit and Resource Management Department, County Administrator Mike Chrystal gave Arnold high marks for her leadership during a difficult period.

Pete Parkinson, deputy director of the agency, is expected to be promoted on an interim basis to the director's position by the board next week.

Arnold said she had been contemplating the job change for more than a year after getting an offer from Peace Corps Director Gaddi Vasquez -- a former Orange County supervisor and a personal friend of Arnold's for more than 20 years. In her new position, Arnold will oversee a variety of administrative functions including payroll and procurement.
