I am pleased to announce that Susana Duarte, formerly with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will join Peace Corps on Monday, June 24, as the Chief Compliance Officer. This is a new position developed as the result of our internal review of safety and security procedures.
As Chief Compliance Officer Susana will be responsible for tracking reports that require compliance follow-up and provide oversight to the activities that need responses. This will include the areas of Safety and Security (the compliance components of Manual Section 270 on Volunteer Safety and Security), IG audits, program and training reviews, and other reviews as appropriate.
Susana joins the Peace Corps from FEMA where she served as the Assistant Director for Regional Operations Directorate. She was responsible for assessing and managing Agency-wide programs and systems. Prior to Susana's appointment to FEMA, she worked in the private sector, where she concentrated on building relations with minority communities as well as developing and executing strategic outreach and advertising programs.
Susana is a graduate from Ohio State University, in Columbus, Ohio, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and National Security Policy Studies. She also serves on the Boards of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), National Hispana Leadership Institute, United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, 100 Hispanic Woman, National Latino Communications Center, National Puerto Rican Coalition, and Bronx Lebanon Hospital to name a few.
Please join me in welcoming Susana to Peace Corps.
