A Photo Essay of the NPCA 40th plus one Closing Ceremonies at the Ampitheatre at Arlington Cemetery

Background

Last month PCOL wrote about the Closing Ceremonies for the NPCA Peace Corps 40th plus one at the Ampitheatre at Arlington Cemetery. Here we provide a photo essay on the ceremony with some commentary.

These photos were taken by photojournalist Kay Muldoon-Ibrahim. Kay was a PCV in Chile, '65-'67,  and a Peace Corps photographer at PC Headquarters in Washington, '68-'69.   Later she worked as a free lance photojournalist for the World Bank, the International Development Association, UNDP, and many UN agencies around the world.  She spent 18 years in East Africa, living in both Ethiopia and Kenya.  She now lives in Fallston Maryland with her family and spends her free time painting.

We have photographs of Senator Harris Wofford and his inspiring speech about what volunteers can do in the future to meet the thrid goal. We will be providing a transcript of the speech in our next issue.

Unfortunately, we do not have a photograph of Director Vasquez while he was speaking but we would like to note that his speech was equally memorable and that the Peace Corps has found a spokesman fully at ease in public speaking who is both eloquent and inspiring in Director Vasquez. We look forward to providing a transcript and possibly a quicktime movie of his speech in our next issue.

An observation from one of the original volunteers. When JFK started the Peace Corps in 1961 it was known as "The Peace Corps." Unfortunately, somewhere along the way the word "The" was dropped and it became "Peace Corps" just like "Defence", "State", "Justice", and all the other bureaucracies in Washington, D.C. Does anyone know exactly when and why this happened?

I knew Ann Kenney who died in 1971 while serving in the Peace Corps. She was a student teacher at Fremont Elementary in San Diego when I met her. I was 10 and 11 years old. She would teach us dance and take us out on outings. When she left to the Peace Corps she would write to me and a few others. Last letter I got from her was from Micronesia. While I was in Collier Jr High I got a letter stating she died and what happened. I sent a condolence letter to her family but never heard back. Later in Montgomery High School I still tried to find her family but could not. I remember her as the beautiful red haired teacher that looked like a movie star and was just as beautiful inside.
