Peace Corps chief to speak at Mission Inn gathering

RIVERSIDE

Gaddi Vasquez, director of the Peace Corps, will address a meeting of the World Affairs Council of Inland Southern California on Thursday at the Mission Inn.

His topic will be "Growing to meet the needs of the 21st century."

A reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the program will start at 6:15 p.m. Reservations are required for the reception and can be made by calling 222-8160.

Cost for the reception and presentation is $30. Cost without the reception is $10. Students may attend the presentation and discussion for free.

Vasquez, the agency's first Hispanic-American director, was nominated by President Bush and sworn in as director on Feb. 15.

He served in the administrations of former governors George Deukmejian and Pete Wilson, and in Gov. Davis' administration. Vasquez was division vice president of public affairs at Southern California Edison before his appointment.

Vasquez was Riverside's community relations coordinator from June 1979 to December 1980, working to improve relations among different racial and ethnic groups in the city.

Vasquez left the job to work as executive assistant for community services for Orange County Supervisor Bruce Nestande. He was responsible for providing services to several cities in northern Orange County.

The World Affairs Council of Inland Southern California is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, educational organization that presents programs on international topics. The council was chartered in 1964 by leaders of area businesses and academic institutions. Membership is open to the public.
