The Peace Corpsí Strategic Plan: Responding to the President's Challenge

Gaddi H. Vasquez, Peace Corps Director

President Bush said during his State of the Union address that he would seek to double the size of the Peace Corps from its current 7,000 volunteers to nearly 15,000.

Application requests to join the Peace Corps have increased substantially since the Presidentís message.

Never has the mission of the Peace Corps in the world been more important.

Yet, questions remain about the role and effectiveness of the Peace Corps as an American assistance program, as well as its future strategic direction in the challenging areas in the world.

Gaddi Vasquez was sworn in as the Director of the Peace Corps on February 15, 2002.

Previously, he was Division Vice President of Public Affairs with Southern California Edison Company. In 1998, California Governor Wilson appointed Gaddi to the California Council for the Humanities, and in 1999, Governor Gray Davis appointed him to the Governor's Task Force on Diversity.

From 1987 to 1995, Gaddi was County Supervisor of Orange County, California, and from 1985 to 1987, he served in the California Governor's Office, first serving as the Hispanic Liaison and then as Chief Deputy Appointments Secretary.
