September 27-29, 2002

John Coyne, returned Volunteer (Ethiopia) writer and editor of two Peace Corps anthologies and of the online newsletter, "Peace Corps Writers," will lead off a weekend of Peace Corps Writing at Fishtrap September 27-29. Coyne will be joined on staff by Richard Wiley (Korea) of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Nevada, and by Peter Chilson (Niger), who teaches at Washington State University and was a Fishtrap writer in residence in 2001.

Fishtrap is an educational non-profit centered in northeastern Oregon - Enterprise is home base - that produces conferences, workshops, and events centered on writing and thinking in the West.

This special weekend will be aimed at RPCVs interested in writing and in knowing what has been and is being written and published by their peers. You need not be a writer - teachers, librarians, and serious readers will be at home - and you certainly need not be a published writer. But this is an invitation to open your trunks and pull out the old journals and photos.

John Coyne will lead off with a history of Peace Corps writing. There will be time to gather by genre of interest - fiction, poetry, non-fiction, journalism - and by times and places of service. Coyne, Wiley, Chilson, and Rich Wandschneider from Fishtrap (Turkey) will point out ways to pursue the writing - workshops, academic programs, etc. - for those ready to write that novel or story that has been resting since the termination conference.

This is a package deal, with meals with an international flavor included in the $100 registration fee. The weekend begins with dinner Friday, September 27 at 6 PM and runs through Sunday brunch. Housing is available in nearby motels and campgrounds check for detailed information on housing in Enterprise and environs - Joseph is 6 miles away; Wallowa Lake is 12 miles. Meetings and workshops will be held in Enterprise at the Fishtrap House and the Odd Fellows Hall. Attendance will be limited to 80.
