OUR OPINION; Peace Corps numbers up

Aug 27, 2002 - Patriot Ledger Quincy, Ma

Author(s): Joann Fitzpatrick

At a time when many Americans feel unwelcome in far-flung corners of the globe, it';s heartening to learn that the Peace Corps is thriving.

This year applications to serve in the Peace Corps have jumped 17 percent. While the slumping job market has something to do with it, other factors are at work, too. Dedication is one, and a desire to make a difference.

The Peace Corps is probably the most unselfish way Americans can serve their country and the world. The pay is dreadful, the living conditions are typically below anything volunteers have previously experienced, and you never know what you';ll reap for the effort.

But 40 years after the first volunteers set out to improve conditions in poor countries, men and women -; not all of them young -; are still attracted to this form of giving.

Officials believe post-Sept. 11 civic consciousness has contributed in some measure to the increased interest. Volunteers are sent to many countries where official rhetoric may sound anti- American but local people are eager to learn from the strangers who have traveled thousands of miles to make a difference.

It remains ";The Toughest Job You';ll Ever Love.";
