NPCA and the Peace Corps Fund comment on the Amended Peace Corps Bill

On October 15, Senator Dodd's Amended Peace Corps bill passed the Senate by Unanimous Consent. We contacted representatives of two of the Returned Volunteer organizations that will be most affected by passage of the bill and asked for their comments.

Pat Reilly comments:

Pat Reilly, Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA), had this to say about passage of the bill:

Quote:

The passage of the Peace Corps Bill in the Senate was a real team effort by Sen. Chris Dodd, his skilled staff, the coalition headed by Roger Landrum and Dave Hibbard and of course the NPCA and its membership. Our advocacy campaign has grown up in the last year with the efforts for Ed Crane and the national network he built. Now the real test is whether we can get the House to rally behind Sam Farr's bill, HR4979, which has many of the same features. These bills show a real concern for the future of the Peace Corps and an understanding of the worth of our continuing service as RPCVs. Here's what Ed Crane asked us to do today as a group to make sure the Charter bills pass intact:

NPCA asks that during October you continue to (1) transmit requests to your Members of Congress, promoting the features of HR 4979 and asking them to cosponsor; (2) promote media attention via OpEds and letters to the editor; and (3) raise the issue directly with Members of Congress through their local and Washington DC offices. Since Members will be campaigning into November, please take advantage of the opportunity to meet them personally at town meetings, or by making appointments. We anticipate there will be a "lame duck session," in December, not yet scheduled.

Thanks for your coverage and education on these important bills.

John Coyne comments:

John Coyne, Publisher of Peace Corps Writers and co-founder with Barbara Ferris of the Peace Corps Fund, had these comments on passage of the bill:

Quote:

We are absolutely thrilled with Senator Dodd's bill and our Peace Corps Fund network looks forward to reaching out to members of the House to support this historic legislation.

We have contacted other members of the Returned Volunteer community for their comments on the bill and will publish them as they come in.
