Support the Peace Corps Bill in Congress

Read and comment on this email we received from Dave Hibbard of the Coalition for the Peace Corps Charter for the 21st Century that Senator Dodd's Peace Corps Bill (S 2667) has a chance of become a Law this year for for doubling the funding and size of the Peace Corps, keeping it independent, utilizing many more RPCVs to further Peace Corps goals, and creating a $10 million fund for RPCV 3rd goal projects.

RPCVs need to contact their Congressmen right now just before the elections, when Congress is most receptive to their constituents, if you want to see this happen. Read the email at:

RE: URGENT ALERT: PEACE CORPS BILL could be KILLED next month

FR: DAVE HIBBARD & ROGER LANDRUM The Coalition for the Peace Corps Charter for the 21st Century

WE HAVE A SENATE BILL

The Senate just passed a great bill, S 2667 (The Peace Corps Charter for the 21st Century Act) which has a chance of become a Law---this year!

WE NEED THE SAME BILL PASSED BY THE HOUSE

The House can make this happen if it passes, intact, the Senate version, S 2667.

Or they can kill the bill by creating their own version (which sends it to conference, where it dies when Congress ends this year).

Today, call, fax and email your Congressman. Tell them you want them to pass the Senate version, S 2667, as it stands. (Creating a House version guarantees there will be no bill at all!)

4 DAYS IN NOVEMBER DECIDE THE FATE OF THE PC BILL

The House reconvenes Nov. 12 - 15, and in those 4 days it will decide the fate of S 2667, (the principles of which the NPCA has supported all along). If S 2667 is not passed by the House, there is a strong possibility that another bill will not emerge next year.

YOUR CONGRESSMAN WILL LISTEN TO YOU---S/HE WANTS YOUR VOTE!!

Now is the time to call and fax because it is just before elections, when Congress is most receptive to their constituents. (They want your vote!!!)

S 2667 calls for doubling the funding and size of the Peace Corps, keeping it independent, utilizing many more RPCVs to further Peace Corps goals, and creating a $10 million fund for RPCV--3rd goal projects.

(Email me, DH, at cdhibbard@indra.com, if you want a complete copy of the bill or go to the Web, http://thomas.loc.gov and type in S 2667 in the ³Bill Number² box. It will tell you there are 4 versions of S 2667; choose No. 3: the bill referred to the House).
