Peace Corps supports Dodd's Amended Peace Corps Bill

Read and comment on this story from the NPCA listserv that at this point the Peace Corps supports passage of Senator Dodd's Amended (S2667) Peace Corps Bill. PCOL reported on October 25 that according to a senior Republican staff member in the House of Representatives, the White House considered passage of Peace Corps legislation a "High Priority" and that that "The President wants to sign a Peace Corps bill."

URGENT ACTION REQUEST from NPCA PEACE CORPS CHARTER S 2667

Two weeks ago we asked you to request your members to support S2667 as amended and passed by the Senate October 15 and sent to the House. We advised you that immediately after the November 5 elections we would update this request.

It is imperative that S2667 be enacted now by the House, in its present form, if we are to have the legislation this year. There is no telling what the outcome will be if we start over in 2003.

TODAY THE PEACE CORPS VERIFIED THAT IT SUPPORTS THIS LEGISLATION AND WANTS IT PASSED NOW IN ITS PRESENT FORM.

THIS MAY BE A ONE-TIME OPPORTUNITY. THE NPCA AND THE ENTIRE RETURNED PEACE CORPS COMMUNITY HAVE WORKED HARD TO GET THIS FAR. IT'S ESSENTIAL THAT WE PUSH IT OVER THE TOP NOW.

During the next week, NPCA will be working closely with the RPCV Members of the House to get S2667 passed and enacted into law.

Please contact all five RPCV House members by phone AND by fax, and ask them to send this joint letter from all five together:

Honorable Dennis J Hastert, Speaker of the House Honorable Henry Hyde, Chair, House International Relations Committee

Gentlemen:

We, the former Peace Corps Volunteer members of the House of Representatives, support enactment of S2667 "The Peace Corps Charter for the 21st Century Act," as amended and approved by the Senate, sent to the House and referred to the House International Relations Committee. The Peace Corps and the Administration also support its enactment.

Please place S2667 on the Suspension Calendar, in order to suspend the rules and allow it to be voted on during the week of November 12-14, so it can be enacted into law in this session of Congress.

Thank you for your support of the Peace Corps.

Jim Walsh (R-NY), 202-225-3701, fax -202-225-4042

When you call, ask for the staffer in charge of Peace Corps affairs.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP! NOW IS THE TIME!
