Jordan clashes leave one dead

AMMAN, Jordan (CNN) -- Fighting between residents and police in southern Jordan left one person dead and three people wounded, Jordan's information minister said Sunday.
After the clashes in Maan, Jordan's army imposed a curfew in the city, about 210 km (130 miles) south of Amman. The city was later reported to be calm, Information Minister Mohammad Adwan said.
Earlier this month, five people died in Maan following clashes between locals and Jordanian government forces searching for an Islamic leader.
Maan is considered an Islamic stronghold in the moderate Arab state. Jordan is a U.S. ally.
Tensions have been high in the city since Muslim fundamentalist leader Mohammad Chalaby, also known as Abu Sayyaf, was wounded in a shootout with police in October. Chalaby escaped and his supporters are said to be protecting him.
Security concerns for Americans in Jordan have been heightened since October 28, when Laurence Foley, a U.S. Embassy employee, was shot and killed. No suspects have been identified publicly in his killing.
Friday, the U.S. State Department issued a warning for Americans traveling to Jordan and approved the voluntary departure of dependents and non-essential personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Amman. And Sunday, the Peace Corps announced it was suspending its programs in the country but its staff will remain.
