I'm a masters student at the University of Michigan (School of Information) and together with a few other students I'm participating in an effort to develop a community library and technology center in Les Cayes, Haiti. The project is a collaboration between students at the University of Michigan Schools of Information , Public Policy, and from the Universities in Quebec and Haiti (Port-au-Prince). We’re also working closely with a committee of Les Cayes citizens to insure that the library is relevant to the community’s needs. Our joint vision is a community resource that serves as an education and social center and provides crucial access to information and technology in one of the world’s poorest countries.
To learn more about the project, you can visit our website at:
Les Cayes community members have already built a space for the library on the grounds of a primary school. In addition, a generous donation of computers will allow us to expand technology and information literacy programs already in place. What we need now are books and funds to purchase books. We’re working hard to get book donations from publishers and libraries but we want to make sure that the materials we get are linguistically and culturally appropriate. To do that, we’re raising funds to purchase French and Creole books in the subjects that community members have requested: computer training, literacy materials, technical training, sanitation, economics, agriculture, and business development. We’d also like to purchase works by Haitian authors and publishers.
We hope you or someone you know will help us with this effort. You can email us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
