ROBERT W. HUGINS

Robert W. Hugins, 81, of Colorado Springs, passed away April 4, 2003.

A teacher, world traveler and former Peace Corps member, he was born in Littleton, CO., and graduated from Princeton University before serving in the Navy during World War II. From 1947 to 1958, he worked in Manila, Philippines; Caracas, Venezuela; Karachi, Pakistan; Willmington, DE.; and Hamilton, Bermuda, for American Life Insurance Company. From 1958 to 1983, he taught math at Fountain Valley School, Colorado Springs, CO., and Berkshire School, Sheffield, MA., among others.

A musician and artist, he played bassoon, piano and organ; painted many pictures, and was active in community theater.

As a math teacher in the Peace Corps, he observed his 65th birthday while in Nepal, and his 70th while in Lesotho. He helped found, and was president of, Pikes Peak Area Peace Corps Alumni. In 2000, he published a book, Experiencing Peace Corps as a Volunteer Over Age 60.

He is survived by sisters, Ruth (Vern) Brown, of Arvada, CO., and Elizabeth (Kenneth) Ellenberger of Ventura, CA.; and brothers, Richard (Beryle) Hugins of Cedaredge, CO., and David Hugins of Sterling, CO.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at the Broadmoor Community Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Broadmoor Community Church Choir Fund, 315 Lake Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO., 80906; or to Silver Key Senior Services, 2250 Bott Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO., 80904.
