Meals on Wheels CEO quits

Javier Garza, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels and More, has resigned to become an executive with the Peace Corps, the Austin nonprofit group announced Tuesday.

He will become country director for the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic this summer. Early in his career, he was a Peace Corps volunteer in Peru and has wanted to return to the service as an overseas executive, according to the organization.

Last year, Garza won Ernst & Young LLP's local Entrepreneur of the Year award in the nonprofit category and the Vision in Volunteerism award from the Austin Directors of Volunteers.

Garza had led Meals on Wheels and More since 1987. In that time, the number of meals delivered and the number of clients served have more than tripled, according to the organization. The waiting list that existed when he took over was eliminated and never reinstituted.

In a letter to board Chairwoman Elizabeth Colvin, Garza wrote: "Our work at Meals on Wheels and More has been near and dear to my heart and an absolute labor of love. It has been an enormously enriching experience. I have treasured your and the board's dedication, trust and support. Because we shared such a common vision and worked together so well, we were able to accomplish many wonderful things."

Dear DR country director,

I am a RPCV from the DR and Ecuador. I am presently running a non-profit, Proyecto ADAMES, in San Fransisco de Macoris, training nurses to improve their maternal child health skills. I would be very interensted in involving PCVs. The website is www.proyectoadames.org.

Please let me know if you are interested.
