Caption: A photo taken by a veteran of the Persian Gulf war was the inspiration for "Closing the Door." Our similarities and commonalities, which reside in all aspects of life, bridge the gap between cultures and ideologies and provide the means to "open the door."

CLOSING THE DOOR
Be a part of the action, it said
the sign hanging on the wall
be all you can be.
Pondering the possibilities, he
glanced in the window, reflecting upon
A fleeting childhood, recollections of dreams
and fragments of memories
Metallic mementos of villages destroyed
and a single hand laying on the desert
as if continuing to wave at those who
destroyed its owner
Or reaching out to shake the hand of another
or to shake the life somehow back into the
still warm child
A jolt and a start; the memories cease and
A young boy approaches, moving closer
Silently he crosses the sidewalk
and before he can be stopped he has crossed
through the threshold--the recruitment
office door, leaving his childhood behind

where did you enter your poem, if online, what site?
Sorry to have taken a year to have seen your post and replied to it! I am slow sometimes to review these things. The submittal was through poetry.com and once you register with the poetry.com site they will send you things from time to time inviting you to submit work. You won't make money doing this but if you have some good poetry, it is a good way to test the waters and see if you and your work are publishable!
i too have been recognized on poetry.com .everyone says they are a scam ?
