Statement by Carol Bellamy, UNICEF Executive Director, on the tragedy in Iraq
GENEVA / NEW YORK, 22 August 2003: The entire UNICEF family - more than 7,000 of us in 158 countries around the world - speaks today with one voice.
Our message is simple but resounding: We stand in unshakeable solidarity with our colleagues in Iraq. Our thoughts and our hearts are with you. To your families and loved ones we send our warmest wishes. To the families of those who have been lost or injured we send our deepest regrets.
We know that the days ahead will be difficult. There are questions that must be answered and lessons that must be learned. There is grieving, and there will be farewells.
But as surely as a future lies within every child, there is a future for all of us. Our efforts on behalf of children, and the better future they point us toward, are more important than ever. Both in Iraq and around the world.
We will not turn away from our humanitarian mission now when it is most needed. As you make halting steps to continue your work on behalf of Iraq's children, we recommit ourselves to a brighter future for children everywhere.
