GENEVA, N.Y. – The White House released a statement today announcing that President Clinton intends to nominate Hobart and William Smith President Mark D. Gearan to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service. Gearan was named president of the Geneva Colleges last summer.

The Corporation for National and Community Service provides opportunities for Americans of all ages to help communities meet critical challenges in the areas of education, public safety, human needs, and the environment. The Corporation oversees three national service initiatives: AmeriCorps, the National Senior Service Corps, and Learn & Serve America.

Gearan's background makes him well qualified for this nomination. Prior to taking the helm at the Colleges, Gearan served as Director of the Peace Corps (1995-1999), was assistant to the President and Director of Communications, as well as Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House. He is the author of numerous articles that have been featured in the Boston Globe, the Miami Herald, and the San Francisco Examiner.

Gearan is an exemplar for students at Hobart and William Smith, as well as for young people across the country and around the world, because of his commitment to building a better world through education and public service. He received a B.A. degree, cum laude, from Harvard University and a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center. He has also been awarded 12 honorary degrees.
