HWS President returns to Harvard to celebrate his 25th reunion and serve as Chief Marshal of the University’s 352nd commencement

(June 3, 2003) GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart and William Smith Colleges President Mark D. Gearan will serve as the Chief Marshal of the 352nd Commencement at Harvard University on Thursday, June 5. In addition President Gearan is one of four alums who will participate in a discussion titled “Can I Still Switch Careers?” held at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 6 at Harvard’s science center.

Graduation week festivities at Harvard include commencement formalities as well as joint reunion celebrations of Harvard and Radcliffe College.

Selected by his classmates to serve as Chief Marshal, Gearan will lead the commencement exercise procession, signaling the Memorial Church bell to herald the start of the morning exercises.

The following morning, Gearan will serve on a panel with fellow 1978 graduates. The discussion will be moderated by John P. Tuke, chief financial officer at The Hotchkiss School. Other panelists include Diane Englander, senior consultant at Community Resource Exchange in New York; Maurice C. Levin, managing director of A&A Cycads; and Susan Schwartz Schaller, vice president of Jay Gaines & Company.

Gearan who has served as the president of Hobart and William Smith since 1999 is the former director of the Peace Corps. Prior to his Peace Corps directorship, Gearan served at the White House as Assistant to the President and Director of Communications, as well as Deputy Chief of Staff. During the 1992 presidential campaign, he was Al Gore's campaign manager, and then Deputy Director of President-elect Clinton's transition team.

Gearan earned his B.A. in government cum laude at Harvard University and his law degree from Georgetown University.
