I agree with your assessment about being informed. I would only add that I agree with the newspaper articles that the risks are minimized by the PC. My brother died in 1988 working as a volunteer in the PC. In many third world countries they shoot first and ask questions later. For someone who was inexperienced in world affairs as my brother was (and probably my whole family as well) the risks were not clearly defined.
As a voluntary member of the armed forces you can make a determination whether to join or not understanding that there is some likelhood that you may come in harms way. I don't believe the potential risks associated with joining the PC are clearly defined or understood by many peace corps volunteers. To the extent that the the newspaper article may make more people knowledgeable about the risks then the DDN has met the burden of providing a public service, even if the writing may be slanted or inacurrate in some way.
