One thing that I found most interesting about this whole series thing was the "Peace Corps Deaths Database," and the fact that if you look through the articles written, many of the stories are of Volunteers who served twenty or more years ago, though the articles repeatedly mention the "continuing danger of being a Peace Corps Volunteer."
Of the approximately 200 deaths since the start of PC, at least 87 of them occurred in the first ten years alone. Further reading the stats shows that in the last ten years there have only been 34 deaths, down to ONE in 2002. Maybe PC had a rough start, but it looks as though their safety record is only improving with time, something that I think deserves to be mentioned.
As a current volunteer serving overseas, I feel that I am responsibile for my well being and my safety, and would be an idiot to try to pass that responsibility on to some hourly employees at Peace Corps HQ thousands of miles away.
