Kendedy never really had much to do with Peace Corps. It was a good political move.

The fact that the Peace Corps is viewed by the majority of Americans as Kennedy's legacy--has secured funding for this sacred cow. If not for JFK, the PC would probably have been defunct long ago. I for one am grateful for his "contributions" to the Corps, even if it was politically motivated as a product of the cold war. Besides, tye-dye is better-received in the village than camo.

Old Pas from my village would speak to me about Kennedy and the first PCVs they met decades before...and this was in the 1990s. Millions of people are thankful for the cultural exchanges and technical assistance that PCVs have provided to developing nations over the years. And many Americans as well have benefited from returned volunteers who've decided on a life of service.

One wonders if Americorps will be as long-lived...

I was in the Ivory Coast when Kennedy was assassinated. The Ivoiriens and the PCVs were devastated by the tragedy. Most of my fellow PCVs felt a real connection with JFK and had been inspired by his words. They were a large part of why I joined the Peace Corps. Whether the Peace Corps was a political move or not made no difference to me then and and makes no difference to me now.
