Security concerns have prompted the Peace Corps to shift its orientation programme for 30 US volunteers from Rupandehi to Kathmandu, officials said.

The volunteers were not actually based in the Butwal area, but were undergoing a 12-week 'pre-service' training in the area. The training was to have finished next month after which the volunteers will be sent to different parts of the kingdom.

Almost 5,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in Nepal since 1962 in a variety of economic development fields.

Earlier, news reports from Butwal said the volunteers had left the area after being threatened by Maoists. Quoting local landlords, the reports said the volunteers had all left. Local police said it had heard the reports, but didn't have details.nepalnews.com mr Nov 19
