PLEASANT RIDGE PRINCIPAL ‘GLOBAL EDUCATOR’
A Catholic school administrator in Cincinnati has won national recognition for his efforts to raise global awareness among his students.
The National Peace Corps Association has presented Robert Herring, principal of Nativity of Our Lord grade school in Pleasant Ridge, with its 2002 Global Educator Award. He was one of only four educators around the country to receive the $500 cash prize for his outstanding contribution to a greater understanding and respect for the people, cultures, and nations of the world.
Angene Wilson, the organization’s global education committee chairperson, said Herring has made Nativity into a model school for cultural exchange, with students traveling to and hosting visitors from other countries. The students, the school and the community remain involved after the visits.
Herring also was lauded for emphasizing geography within the curriculum, supporting students’ efforts to assist people in need internationally as well as fighting prejudice at home, and his recognition that through the arts students can broaden their vision of the world.
The NPCA is a non-profit association of returned Peace Corps volunteers. Its global education program, Global TeachNet, established the Global Educator Award in 1997. For more information, contact Anne Baker, NPCA’s director of global education, at (202) 293-7728, extension 12.
