Community activist and information technology (IT) expert Gopal Khanna was recently appointed chief information officer (CIO) of the Peace Corps, according to a press release issued by the agency.

Peace Corps Director Gaddi H. Vasquez said: “Khanna brings to the institution his extensive experience in leveraging technology to improve business processes and we are happy to have him as a part of our team.”

Khanna, who was selected for the senior foreign service policymaking position in the high- profile agency that seeks to “promote world peace and friendship,” will serve as the firstline advisor to the agency’s director and other senior officials on issues related to information technology (IT), the release added.

Dr. Piyush Agrawal, national president of the AIA, said: “Khanna’s appointment to the senior position in the Bush administration is welcome news for all Indian American across America.”

He added, “Khanna is an accomplished professional and a well-known leader in the community. He has distinguished himself on behalf of all Americans and will be a great addition to the Bush administration.”

Prior to joining the Peace Corps, Khanna, was president and chief executive officer of Information Technologies Consultants (ITC), a Minneapolis-based technology solutions firm that specializes in providing information technology process improvement, building customized optimization tools and implementing an information systems project for Fortune 1000 companies.

A Republican Party activist and supporter of the United States’ President George W. Bush, Khanna has helped in not only implementing strategies for the party but also brought in new voters and contributors for the party’s candidates, the release added.

“Khanna is truly deserving of this important position and will be a strong addition to the administration,” Sen. Jim Ramstad, Minnesota Republican, was quoted as saying in the release.

Dr. Joy Cherian, the first Indian American appointed by the former U.S. president Ronald Reagan to a sub-cabinet level position, said: “Khanna is an extremely qualified gentleman who believes in grassroot-level community service.”

A resident of Edina, Minn., Khanna currently serves as a member of the board of directors of Minnesota International Center at Ronald McDonald House and the Minnesota Minority Supplier Development Council.
