Community College Graduates' Current Opportunities in Peace Corps
The Peace Corps is recruiting volunteers for international assignments in 19 vocational areas that fall within the Environmental, Health, Community Development, Business and Agricultural sectors. Community college grads qualify for 10 of these 19 areas, according to information from the Denver Peace Corps recruiting office.
Currently, there are only 44 associate degree graduates serving in the Peace Corps. This comprises less than 1% of the total volunteer force.
Assignment areas requiring an Associate degree or less include:
* Agronomy, horticulture or other agriculture discipline;
* Animal husbandry, animal science or poultry science;
* Vegetable gardening, nursery work/management, tree planting, tree care, urban forestry, fish (fresh or marine) cultivation/production;
* Industrial arts or technical education with one year related work experience;
* Any discipline and one year full-time work experience in youth leadership training or in directing youth programs for at-risk youth between the ages of 10 and 25 in a youth-oriented organization;
* One year work experience in construction, masonry, carpentry, or plumbing;
* Currently Registered Nurse (RN) with an Associates Degree in Nursing and a demonstrated interest in community health, or LPN/LVN with two years post-license experience and a demonstrated interest in community health;
* Any discipline (not including economics) with two years experience as the manager of a business;
* Computer-related discipline with two years computer experience; forestry or watershed management; and natural resources, environmental science, or ecology.
In particular, the Peace Corps is seeking individuals with education in crop extension, animal husbandry and forestry and those interested in contributing in Africa.
