Action Corps Head Sam Brown supports Kerry

Read and comment on this story from the London Daily Telegraph that former Action Corps head Sam Brown (Co-organizer of the 1969 Vietnam Moratorium and volunteer coordinator for McCarthy for President) supports Kerry for President. The story says he was the former head of the Peace Corps but that is inaccurate. Sam Brown was head of the Action Corps under President Carter. Action Corps was an umbrella organization that included the Peace Corps much like today's USA Freedom Corps.

Sam Brown is best remembered during his Action Corps tenure for forcing the resignation of Peace Corps Director Carolyn Payton, an act that in retrospect did a lot of good because it caused a backlash that eventually resulted in the dissolution of Action Corps and the reinstatement of the Peace Corps as an independent agency. A dispatch from Iowa. Two old friends, Sam and Alison Brown (he was once head of Carter's Peace Corps) have been giving their support to John Kerry.

Sam, a veteran Democrat, is cheered when he appears in Council Bluffs. Having helped found the Moratorium Against the War in Vietnam, the last time he was in a community hall in the town he was accused of being a traitor.

"I started the South Beach diet the same day I started campaigning," writes Alison on her website, "because campaigns are all about sexual tension in the headquarters. I thought this was a foolproof time to lose weight. Unfortunately it turns out the parts of my brain that used to be controlled by sexual fantasies are now only interested in blue cheese, Iowa pork and good merlot."

Having watched Kerry on television celebrating his victory on Tuesday night, it was enlightening to be reminded of the anonymous, gruelling and thankless task of those working for his glory.

"A woman said her husband had broken his leg and wouldn't be going to the caucus," Alison reports, "and I had to talk to her about pain management and told her of websites that dealt with broken legs. I figured she would be so mystified she'd feel compelled to vote for Kerry."

Crickey! I said to Penrose, you have to admire their energy, let's hope it ends with an ambassadorship. Even if it's only Iceland.
