1. Peace Corps Director Gaddi Vasquez recently announced that he would not, as originally reported, resign this year and return to politics in California. How many current U.S. representatives were once Peace Corps volunteers?

2. Only one current U.S. senator is a past Peace Corps volunteer. Can you name him?

3. Two state governors are past Peace Corps volunteers. Can you name them?

4. What past Peace Corps director went on to serve as a U.S. senator?

5. Who was the only former Peace Corps director be on a national party ticket?

ANSWERS

1. Four: Democrat Mike Honda (Calif.) and Republicans Tim Petri (Wis.), Chris Shays (Conn.), and James Walsh (N.Y.).

[Actually the number is five. They forgot Sam Farr of California. In addition, there are a number of former Congressmen who were RPCVs including Tony Hall of Ohio, Mike Ward of Kentucky, and Paul Henry of Michigan. - Admin1]

2. Democrat Christopher Dodd of Connecticut.

[In addition, the late Senator Paul Tsongas of Massachusetts was a volunteer who served in Ethiopia. Interestingly enough Country Director Harris Wofford who was in Ethiopia at the same time as Tsongas also became a Senator from Pennsylvania. Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Senator Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina both worked at the Peace Corps in the 1960's. - Admin1]

3. Republican Gov. Robert Taft of Ohio and Democratic Gov. James Doyle of Wisconsin.

4. Paul Coverdell, director from 1989-91, was Republican U.S. senator from Georgia from 1992 until his death in 2000.

5. R. Sargent Shriver, director from 1961-65, was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in 1972.
