National Guardsmen have not come from those who fled to Canada, joined the Peace Corps, VISTA or married for a draft deferment

The controversy concerning President Bush’s National Guard duty during the Vietnam War could lead to the conclusion that serving in the Guard was shirking military duty.

The Army National Guard celebrated its 367th anniversary on Dec. 12. It predated the Army by 139 years. It has been involved in every conflict our country has been involved in since 1636.

It was involved in the Vietnam War, in a limited role, sustaining deaths and casualties.

It was kept in reserve to cover any aggression from the Soviet Union. The Guard would have been used as a speed bump until the Army could deploy from Vietnam.

The guardsmen in this action would not have come from those who fled to Canada, joined the Peace Corps, VISTA or married for a draft deferment.

The first military unit to arrive at the World Trade Center was a Guard unit trained in chemical, biological and radiological contamination.
