On March 24, the House Committee on International Relations held hearings on Safety and Security of Peace Corps Volunteers. Witnesses included (left to right) Peace Corps Inspector General Charles Smith, NPCA President Kevin Quigley, GAO's Jess Ford, DDN Editor Jeffrey Bruce, and Walter Poirier.
Committee Chairman Henry Hyde has said he plans to introduce the Peace Corps Safety and Security Act of 2004 to create an agency ombudsman; enhance the Corps' security office; and give greater independence to the agency's Office of the Inspector General.
