Dane F. Smith, Jr., President of the National Peace Corps Association had a career of over 30 years in the United States Foreign Service. He served as U.S. Ambassador to Guinea (1990-1993), Special Envoy for Liberia (1995-1996) and U.S. Ambassador to Senegal (1996-1999). His talk examines main trends in U.S. foreign policy toward Africa since the end of the Cold War. In addition, it notes the impact of 1) the Peace Corps on Africa and other developing countries, 2) Returned Peace Corps movement on the implementation of U.S. foreign policy toward Africa and the developing world, and 3) Returned Peace Corps Volunteers on overseas development in Africa and elsewhere through NGO's and the private sector.
