SITE GOALS

Having served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Chile from 1980-1982 and contracting a chronic, life altering illness, I am looking for other RPCVs who have struggled to obtain diagnoses as well as a federal US Department of Labor, Workers' Compensation claim to cover medical expenses.

I contracted bovine tuberculosis, and a myriad of parasitic diseases, and later a manifestation of meningitis as a result of my work in rural Chile. It has taken me numerous years to first get diagnosed and then to obtain a US Department of Labor claim to attempt to have my related medical bills paid. I have conducted numerous congressional investigations in order to obtain medical coverage, and continue to struggle with the government. My health is gradually improving but I have not been well since before the Peace Corps.

I have been informed that of all Peace Corps Volunteers who become injured or ill as a result of their service, that only 5% succeed in obtaining a workers' compensation claim and that only 1% of those sucessfully get medical reimbursement. I have found the Peace Corps office to be of little help.

I would like to compile accounts from people who have been in a similar situation so that I/we can make this issue known so that corrections can be made to the system. I would also like to lobby Congress for a group health plan for people who are in a situation similar to my own.

But I cannot do this alone! I would like to learn of your stories so please contact me!
