About the Book
SARGE: The Life and Times of Sargent Shriver (Smithsonian Books, distributed by W.W. Norton; Pub Date: May 4, 2004; $32.50 HC) is the first authorized biography of a man who defined "Kennedy" liberalism sometimes more profoundly than the Kennedys themselves. As one of the more remarkable figures in the corridors of power during the Kennedy Camelot years, it's impossible not to view Shriver's accomplishments through the prism of balancing his family, his country, the ills of the world and Democratic politics.
Given full access to Shriver and his family, senior Atlantic Monthly editor Scott Stossel deftly renders a complex, often contradictory figure who was at once a passionate human rights advocate and Kennedy in-law married to Eunice Kennedy, JFK's sister, which forever melded the personal and professional spheres of Shriver's life.
