Senator Paul S. Sarbanes congratulates University of Maryland Alumni for their Committment to the Peace Corps
Senator Paul S. Sarbanes (D-MD), who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today congratulated the University of Maryland for ranking 18th nationally on the list of large colleges and universities with alumni currently serving as Peace Corps Volunteers. Today, 58 University of Maryland alumni are representing the United States abroad by serving as Peace Corps volunteers.
Gaddi Vasquez, the Director of the Peace Corps, recently wrote Sarbanes noting that, “throughout the years this school has made a tremendous contribution to our agency’s global legacy of public service. This ranking clearly reflects the high caliber of the institution’s students.”
Sarbanes, who is a strong supporter of the Peace Corps, added that, “Peace Corps volunteers play a vital role in the promotion of education, health care, HIV/AIDS education, and community and agricultural development countries throughout the world.”
“I am particularly pleased with the strong support from the alumni of the University of Maryland, whose spirit of volunteerism and service abroad is helping to promote hope and opportunity to countless citizens overseas,” he added.
