I am a great admirer of Sargeant Shriver. I recently applied to serve in the Peace Corps as a volunteer and may go to Africa in September. This rounds out a pretty complete career in the War on Poverty. In 1966, I was a founding board member of the Birmingham, Alabama Community Action Agency (CAA) when Mr. Shriver was OEO National Director; later I became director of the CAA. When Mr. Shriver was the Vice Presidential running mate of George McGovern in 1972, he visited the JCCEO North Birmingham Neighborood Service Center. It was one of the highlights in the history of that community action agency. Later I would be Acting Director of the California OEO under Gov. Jerry Brown. Still inspired by Mr. Shriver and his vision, I am looking forward to service in the Peace Corps.
Sincerely,
G. David Singleton
