STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR BOB TAFT REGARDING THE PASSING OF RONALD REAGAN

COLUMBUS (June 5, 2004) - Governor Bob Taft today ordered flags at half-staff in honor of the passing of Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States of America and issued the following statement:

"We mourn the loss of an extraordinary leader.

"President Reagan will be remembered for reviving the American spirit and restoring America's leadership in the world. His leadership accelerated the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the decades-long Cold War. He truly changed the world, and America, for the better.

"I was honored to chair his Ohio re-election campaign in 1984, and together with millions of Ohioans was inspired by his faith in America and his positive vision for what we can accomplish as a nation.

"Personally, I have been influenced by his continuously upbeat manner and by his confidence in the strength and abilities of the American people.

"We should all take time to appreciate and be grateful for President Reagan's leadership in trying times, and for the strong support he received from Nancy Reagan both when he was in office, and during the last, difficult years of his life."
