Kline, Colleagues Improve Safety and Security for Peace Corps Volunteers
WASHINGTON – June 4th, 2004 - Congressman John Kline (R-MN) joined his colleagues to pass legislation to improve the safety and security of Peace Corps volunteers.
The legislation was created in response to reports of missing Peace Corps volunteer, Walter J. Poirier, and the challenges faced by volunteers in the post-September 11th environment. Among its measures to protect volunteers, the Health, Safety, and Security of Peace Corps Volunteers Act:
- Creates an Office of Safety and Security, which is responsible for Peace Corps safety and security activities;
- Creates a more independent inspector general of the Peace Corps to provide oversight;
- Establishes the position of Ombudsman to manage complaints and concerns regarding safety and security, benefits and assistance, and medical or other health related assistance; and
- Requires medical screening procedures to determine if applicants are fit to volunteer.
“Our Peace Corps volunteers understand the risk involved with their commitment, but we must provide every protective measure available to ensure their safety and security,” said Kline.
