Suspected molester appears in court

A Santa Cruz man who allegedly had sex with a 14-year-old boy in Costa Rica last year while working as a Peace Corps volunteer appeared in federal court Monday in San Jose, but did not enter a plea, the U.S. District Attorney’s Office reported.

Timothy Ronald Obert, 36, will return to court Aug. 26, when he is expected to enter a plea.

Obert had a public defender, but Santa Cruz defense attorney Paul Meltzer became his attorney of record Monday, prosecutors said.

Computerized county criminal records dating to 1994 show no convictions for Obert. They do show that a misdemeanor battery charge was dismissed in 2001.
